As we approach Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a time to honor the legacy of a visionary leader, there’s no better place to commemorate his contributions than in the historic city of Boston. Steeped in American history, Boston offers a unique backdrop for reflection and celebration. You might wish to share your favorite quote on social media to show your respect for the civil rights icon, but here are some meaningful activities to make the most of your Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Boston. From historical landmarks to community events, discover how this city pays homage to the ideals and dreams that Dr. King tirelessly championed. Join us in exploring the essence of this significant day in one of the nation’s most culturally rich cities.

Breakfast First

Begin the day by celebrating Dr. King at The 54th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast on January 15, 2024 at 9:00 AM at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center  (+ Livestream.)  This is a significant event orchestrated by the Martin Luther King Memorial Breakfast Committee. Dedicated to fostering harmony among the people of Greater Boston, the committee actively advances the enduring legacy of Dr. King.

This annual breakfast, held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, stands as a powerful tribute to the iconic civil rights leader. Its purpose is to carry forward Dr. King’s message of nonviolence and advocate for equality for all. Operating as a nonprofit organization, the MLK Memorial Breakfast Committee hosts this premier event annually, recognizing exceptional contributions to diversity and inclusion through service and scholarships.

Under the compelling theme for this year, “Keeping the Promise of Democracy,” the 54th celebration of the Martin Luther King Memorial Breakfast brings together a community committed to realizing the principles of democracy. Driven by contemporary challenges to affirmative action, civil rights, reproductive care, and LGBTQ+ protections, the event draws inspiration from Dr. King’s timeless words on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial: “This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy.” Attendees are invited to join in reaffirming their commitment to these promises as they commemorate the enduring spirit of Dr. King.

Visit the ICA

Next Consider stoping by the ICA which is also in Boston’s Seaport. One of several museums offering free admission, The ICA extends an invitation for freeadmission to all visitors on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 15. To ensure your spot, secure your complimentary advanced tickets starting Sunday, January 14 at 10 AM. The ICA will allow visitors to engaging activities, including art-making, a special short film screening, and exploration of three acclaimed exhibitions.

Visit a Memorial Site

Boston Common, “The Embrace” Today could be a great day to pay your respects at The Boston Common’s “The Embrace,”and mark the one year inauguration of its unveiling. Boston University is home to a different Memorial called Free at Last. If you have time to visit them both, let us know how they resonate with you.

“The Embrace” stands as a profound tribute to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The bronze figural abstraction, spanning an impressive 20 feet in height and 25 feet in width, draws inspiration from a poignant moment captured in a photograph: the embrace between Dr. King and Coretta Scott King following his receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

This memorial distinguishes itself from conventional statues by deviating from a singular, heroic representation of Dr. King. Instead, it eloquently highlights the potency of collective action, underscores the leadership role of women, and underscores the creation of new bonds through shared empathy and vulnerability. “The Embrace” serves as a groundbreaking effort to visually manifest Dr. King’s concept of agape love — a love that transcends the personal to encompass a universal, selfless compassion for all.

Beyond its sculptural significance, the memorial is a testament to Coretta Scott King’s unwavering faith in the transformative power of art. It stands as a tangible symbol of her lifelong commitment to combating militarism, poverty, discrimination, racism, and sexism. In essence, “The Embrace” transcends its bronze form, becoming a powerful narrative of love, resilience, and the enduring pursuit of justice.

“Free at Last” Boston University While the statue has been strife with criticism from the city residents and internet since its unveiling, Boston University’s “Free at Last’ statue has had a longer and less controversial history on the campus. Ascending toward a radiant midday sun, the 50 doves comprising “Free at Last” embody the essence of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s profound “I Have a Dream” speech. This sculpture, a creation of the talented Chilean artist Sergio Castillo, graces Marsh Plaza since its unveiling in 1975, capturing a powerful moment in history. Photographed by John O’Rourke, the image beautifully encapsulates the symbolic flight of these doves, perpetuating the enduring spirit of Dr. King’s dream.

Boston Symphony

Boston Children’s Chorus—In the Name of Love: 21st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Concert

In a powerful homage to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Boston Children’s Chorus graces Symphony Hall with their 21st Annual Tribute Concert, “In the Name of Love.” This event transcends time, connecting the struggles for equality across diverse communities throughout history. The performance not only uplifts the voices of civil rights pioneers like Coretta Scott King and Bayard Rustin but also pays tribute to the enduring spirit of modern-day activists who follow the blueprint they laid.

As the chorus takes the stage, the concert becomes a poignant reminder that the fight for love, justice, and equality is an ongoing narrative. In the resounding echoes of the music, we find a collective call to continue the pursuit of love — for, in love’s victory, we all triumph. Join us in this musical celebration that resonates with the timeless ideals of Dr. King, reminding us that the quest for a more just and compassionate world is a shared endeavor.

Museum of Fine Arts Boston MFA

Boston’s illustrious history with John Singer Sargent and fashion takes center stage in a new exhibition starting October 8th, 2023 at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

John Singer Sargent’s Portraits: Sargent was a highly skilled portrait artist known for his elegant and lifelike depictions of his sitters. He paid meticulous attention to the details of the fabric and clothing in his subjects’ attire, rendering them in sensuous strokes of paint.

Sargent’s Influence on Dress: Sargent didn’t just passively record what his sitters wore; he often had a say in their clothing choices. Even if sitters arrived in the latest fashions, he frequently simplified or altered the details, emphasizing his role in shaping their appearance.

Get tickets to Fashioned by Sargent at MFA Boston

Exploiting Dress as Artistry: The manipulation of dress and fashion was an integral part of Sargent’s artistic practice. It allowed him to express distinctive personalities, social positions, professions, gender identities, and nationalities in his portraits.

Exhibition Details: The exhibition “Fashioned by Sargent” is organized in collaboration with Tate Britain. It delves into Sargent’s complex relationship with his often-affluent clients and their clothing choices. The exhibition examines how he used clothing to shape his sitters’ images and reveals the liberties he took with their sartorial choices.

Artistic Power: The exhibition highlights Sargent’s artistic power in shaping his subjects’ images, emphasizing how he used clothing to convey various aspects of their identity and social standing.

Paintings and Garments: The exhibition features around 50 paintings by Sargent, alongside over a dozen period garments and accessories. These artifacts shed new light on the connection between fashion and Sargent’s creative process. Visitors can see both the paintings and the actual garments worn by the sitters, enhancing the understanding of how dress was used in his work.

Notable Portraits: The exhibition showcases notable portraits by Sargent, including Graham Robertson’s portrait, Madame X, Lady Agnew, and Dr. Pozzi at Home. Visitors can explore the connection between these iconic works and the clothing choices made by the sitters.

Ellen Terry and Mrs. Charles Inches: The exhibition specifically mentions Ellen Terry as Lady Macbeth, wearing a beetle-wing-encrusted costume, and Mrs. Charles Inches (Louise Pomeroy) in her red velvet evening gown. These examples further illustrate how dress played a role in Sargent’s art.

Sargent’s Perspective on Dress: Sargent’s own perspective on dress is highlighted through a quote: “The coat is the picture,” indicating the importance of clothing in his work.

Image Curation and Control: The exhibition invites visitors to consider the process of curating and controlling one’s image, emphasizing how Sargent’s manipulation of dress played a significant role in this process.

To take a journey through the fashion of John Singer Sargent visit the MFA Boston now through January 15th, 2024.

Offered by the Boston History
Collaborative, this brand new (this month) three-hour theme tour can be viewed
at this site and must be booked in advance for the second Saturday only of any
month. Note both a guided (bus) and a self-guided version with book. We took the
bus tour, which leaves from Omni Parker House, School St. entrance, at 9:00 am.
Pre-determined highlights include Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s house in
Cambridge, perchance a stop at the gift shop there; the Concord Museum with a
guided tour by Henry David Thoreau himself (honest); and a guided tour of

Offered by the Boston History
Collaborative, a three-hour theme tour of Boston’s Literary Landmarks is offered the second Saturday of each month. Both a

guided tour by bus, and a self-guided walking version, with guidebook, are offered. Among the landmarks “off the beaten path” are Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Forest Hills Cemetery in Jamaica Plain, and Sleepy Hollow in Concord.  We recommend joining a bus tour, which
departs at 9:00 AM from the Omni Parker House Hotel in Boston’s Downtown Crossing neighborhood.

The Omni Parker House is where Charles Dickens first read The Christmas Carol before the legendary Saturday Club, whose members included Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Greenleaf Whittier, and James Russell Lowell, among others.  Just outside the hotel, at the corner of School and Washington streets, visitors can see the brick house with a steep gambrel roof built in 1712.

At the Old South Meeting House

The building has undergone several incarnations over the centuries, but today looks much the way it did as the Old Corner Bookstore, which occupied the site beginning in the 1820s and was frequented by prominent writers of the day.  Across the street from the bookstore is Old South Meeting House. When the building was threatened with demolition in the 1870s, writers Julia Ward Howe, Louisa May Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, James Russell Lowell, and Wendell Philips led efforts to save it.

The Boston Athenaeum

The independent library known as the Boston Athenaeum is the depository for important paintings and sculptures, as well as book collections, including the private library of George Washington. Visitors are welcomed into the first and second floors of the No. 10-1/2 Beacon Street address anytime, but reservations are necessary for guided weekday tours of the Edward Clarke Cabot building.  Louisa May Alcott actually wrote her mysteries under a pseudonym while living in the building across the street.

The bus tour stops briefly at the Boston Public Library, and heads outside the city toward Concord, passing by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s Cambridge home and Mount Auburn Cemetery, the final resting place of many famous literary figures.   In Concord, visitors will see the desk on which Henry David Thoreau penned Civil Disobedience and Walden on exhibit at the Concord Museum.  Another stop is across the road at the Orchard House, the fictional setting for the Louisa May Alcott novel Little Women.

In
the nineteenth century, Boston was the intellectual hub and
literary mecca of the United States.  Modeled after the famous Freedom Trail, This Literary Trail spans three hundred years and remarkable numbers of literary talent.  Your journey through literary history is complimented by a stay at the Clarendon Square Inn.  When you return from exploring the Literary Trail, curl up with a classic in our Library with a cappuccino.  Or take your leatherbound to the roofdeck for unparalleled skyline views while you read the classics.  Our Boston boutique hotel in the South End neighborhood is in a carefully restored 19th century brownstone rowhouse offering luxury accomodations. Let the team at Clarendon Square guide you in a discovery of all things Boston!

one light grey oyster open on ice For Oyster devotees, nothing seems to be able to rival these silky, shelled delicacies. The good news is the popularity & supply seem to go hand and hand making them a relatively affordable treat. This is certainly the case in Boston which has access to some of the most sought after oysters in New England.

While dollar oyster happy hours can offer be an alluring offer, Boston oyster experts suggest, enjoying oysters at an establishment that specializes in seafood, which helps to ensure you will receive fresh oysters that have been properly handled and prepared. Signs of a fresh oyster include a plump oyster in shell full of liquid. The slight fragrance should be like a salty sea breeze.

Another benefit of enjoying oysters at an oyster bar or seafood restaurant is the selection. Places specializing in dollar oysters typically offer one kind. One of the beauties of oysters are their uniqueness thanks to their specific variety and location where they are harvested.

When it comes to enjoying an oyster are accompaniments really necessary? Most oyster experts & chef would say fresh & simple is all you need. Maybe a mist from a lemon wedge.

Just like selecting the right oyster takes a careful level of consideration, so does selecting the right oyster bar. To make it easy for you we have narrowed it down to our favorites.

Cheers to our friends at Bar Mezzana for being named Boston Magazine’s Best Restaurant, General Excellence. Since opening two years ago we have loved this modern, coastal Italian restaurant. The diverse menu is simply delicious offering something for every palate. The best way to begin is with a crudo course. The ever evolving menu highlights quality ingredients with intriguing flavor profiles. Some all time favorites include fresh fish with dill, cucumber & lime or blood orange, radish and chili with mint. If you have a difficult time deciding among the many amazing crudos, considering sharing the crudo tasting, which features six crudos served in two courses. The perfect portion to share with a date or enjoy all by yourself.

bowl of ravioli with 3 pieces of fried sage

Next you will likely want to move to a pasta course featuring house made pastas. The lobster Paccheri is the reigning champ on the menu feature chunks of lobster in a slightly spicy tomato sauce.

If you are seeking something other than pasta the menu has great dishes like their signature roasted chicken. They have even been known to run specials at the bar like the coveted Chicken Parmezzana and a mean burger. Overall, the restaurant is a star because the the owners and team pour some much love and hospitality into the experience. Maybe that is why they are launching a tiki bar later this year.
