Experience the iconic contemporary art of Yayoi Kusama at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. Her ideas of pop art, minimalism and psychedelia are significant throughout her expression in paintings, performances, immersive experiences, outdoor sculptural installations, literary works, films, design and architectural interventions make her one of the most influential artists of our times. LOVE IS CALLING premiered in Japan in 2013 and is the most immersive and kaleidoscopic of the artist’s celebrated Infinity Mirror Rooms.

LOVE IS CALLING represents the culmination of Kusama’s artistic achievements, this exhibit exquisitely exemplifies her visual vocabulary. Visitors will experience the creative splendor of her signature polka dots and soft sculptures along with brilliant colors, spoken word, and most importantly, endless reflections and the illusion of space. Enter a dark, mirrored room brilliantly illuminated by inflatable, tentacle-like forms, which are covered in the artist’s iconic polka dots extending from the floor and ceiling. Visitors will watch as the exhibit gradually changes colors.

Walking throughout the installation, visitors will listen to a recording of Kusama reciting a love poem in Japanese. The poem’s title, which was written by Kusama translates to Residing in a Castle of Shed Tears. The poem poignantly underscores Kusama’s hope to share a universal message of love through her art.

Kusama is among most recognized and celebrated artists of our times. In 1966, the ICA exhibited an Infinity Mirror Room, now titled Endless Love Show, in the ICA exhibition Multiplicity; the museum also owns a 1953 drawing by the artist, titled A Flower (No. 14). LOVE IS CALLING is the largest of Kusama’s existing Infinity Mirror Rooms, and the first one held in the permanent collection of a New England museum.
