Neighborhood favorite Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe has
reopened. The South End mainstay, known equally for its turkey hash and its
rich history, closed last year after 87 years of lunch-counter service and
fanfare. Business resumed on Friday, January 22nd, with new
ownership under Stella’s chef/owner Evan Deluty, but the same old charm.
Don’t be fooled by the name, Charlie’s currently serves
just breakfast food, with omelettes, pancakes, and their famous turkey hash
comprising the bulk of the menu. It’s classic food in a classic setting. This
is a place where you sit in a stool along the counter, or cozy into one of
the small tables, and enjoy a bottomless mug of fresh coffee. In a time of
preciously composed dishes, Charlie’s serves plates of food. The thrill at
Charlie’s is in the comfort and nostalgia of a neighborhood diner.
Conveniently located less than 2 blocks away from the Clarendon
Square Inn, Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe has fed celebrities, athletes, at least
one President, and our neighbors for generations. Visiting Charlie’s is a way
to experience one piece of Boston’s rich history.
